Top 6 Reasons Students 🎒 Struggle To Land Software Engineer 💻 Jobs
I’ve browsed a computer science (CS) subreddit called r/cscareerquestions (924,000+ members as of Oct. 1 2022) daily for about five years. In the subreddit, people ask questions about career paths, role changes, resumes, coding interviews and more. It’s popular with students so I’ve read countless posts and made some as well. Here’s what I believe are the top six reasons, CS students struggle to find a software engineer (SWE) job.
Ranking: 1 (most common) — 6 (least common)
1. Didn’t apply to enough jobs 🖱
A surprising amount of CS students just…….don’t apply enough! Many posts look like this:
OP (Original Poster): I’m struggling to land a SWE internship. What am I doing wrong? I’ve had my resume checked by multiple people.
Commenter: How many jobs have you applied to?
OP: Around 40.
You need to apply to as many jobs as possible so try applying outside your state too. Early in your career, you can’t afford to be too picky. Even if you don’t see yourself staying in that area, you should apply. Apply anytime you can work, starting from freshman year.
