A Retrospection of My One Year New Grad Job Hunt

On a warm summer day sometime in May 2020, I embarked on my job hunt for new graduate software engineering roles. I was an incoming senior at Montclair State University, interning remotely at Cisco as a software engineer intern during the COVID-19 pandemic. My previous job search had thankfully been my shortest, lasting only three months. I vividly recall that afternoon, when I got an email, a job offer from Cisco in my college dorm room shortly after moving in for the fall 2019 semester. It was a day or two before my junior year and I felt relieved the whole process was over before school even started 😅. Little did I know, my current job search would be the longest, hardest and most impactful, I’ve ever had. Here are some reflections I’ve had, during a time of fear, uncertainty and unemployment.

The job search is very random

Many people often stay in bad positions despite harsh working conditions, low wages and undesirable management. I think one those reasons, is due to the uncertainty of the job search process.
